THE COURAGE TO CREATE

A performing arts creative workshop

Key Concepts include Embracing Creative Autonomy, Fostering Imagination, Objective vs. Subjective Perspectives, Creative Laboratories, Courage to Create, and Participant-Centered Exploration.

In the world of dance, choreography, and physical theatre, there are no fixed rules, no step-by-step guides, and no one-size-fits-all approach. Every director/choreographer carves their unique path, constantly evolving and adapting their creative process.

The Courage to Create is a workshop that celebrates this artistic freedom, encouraging you to find your own voice, develop your creative abilities, and embrace the beauty of experimentation and uncertainty.

“Courage is not a virtue or value among other personal values like love o fidelity. It is the foundations that underlies and gives reality to all other virtue and personal values

— Rollo May

Workshop Overview:

The creative path toward a performance is a deeply personal journey, and it's not without its moments of discomfort, fear, and uncertainty. Sometimes, the vastness of creative freedom can feel overwhelming, leaving us feeling lost and unsure of where to begin. This is natural—and a vital part of the creative process. Here, in this workshop, we recognise that limits can paradoxically provide a sense of safety, giving structure within which creativity can thrive. By acknowledging this balance between freedom and limitation, we'll explore the uncharted territories of your imagination.

Key Concepts:

  • Embracing Creative Autonomy: Make, break, and redefine your own rules. Discover the power of choice and the freedom to shape your creative process according to your vision. Yet, understand that this freedom can be daunting, and in moments of feeling lost, you may find new paths and fresh inspiration.

  • Fostering Imagination: Fuel your imagination with a rich tapestry of sensory experiences, allowing you to draw from an extensive palette of emotions and ideas in your work. Even fear and uncertainty can be catalysts for creativity, opening unexpected doors.

  • Objective vs. Subjective Perspectives: Explore the art of becoming active audience members for each other's work. Develop the ability to view performative ideas objectively and subjectively, providing constructive feedback while respecting individual artistic choices.

  • Creative Laboratory: Engage in a collaborative creative laboratory that expands your consciousness, both physically and conceptually. These spaces will encourage you to push the boundaries of your expression while offering supportive limits to help you stay grounded.

  • Courage to Create: Celebrate the courage it takes to embark on the creative journey. Embrace the unpredictable and accept that moments of doubt or discomfort are part of the process. Use these feelings as stepping stones, and let the unknown become a source of inspiration, not fear.

The Approach:

As your guide on this creative odyssey, my role is to provide a nurturing and supportive environment where you can explore, experiment, and take artistic risks. The Courage to Create is not about imposing a method but about “getting lost together” in a space where limits and freedom coexist to nurture your unique creative spirit.

Participant-Centered Exploration:

In this workshop, your creative voice is at the forefront. Together, we'll embark on a journey of self-discovery that includes time for questioning, self-reflection, and even grappling with the uncomfortable. We'll celebrate the diversity of creative approaches, learn from each other's experiences, and recognise that moments of feeling stuck or afraid are not setbacks but part of the discovery.

The Courage to Create workshop is a place where there are no wrong turns, only discoveries waiting to be made. Unlock the courage to create, embrace the discomfort, and let your imagination soar. This is an invitation to be part of a transformative experience where both the unpredictable and the limits you set are embraced, allowing creativity to dance without bounds.
